Weed & Feed: Step 2 to a Healthy Lawn

Applying #2 IFA Weed & Feed

Spring is here! Bees are buzzing, gardens are being planted with seeds and starts, and the lawn is looking for a healthy meal with weed control. In one easy step, IFA Weed & Feed builds a strong, dark green turf while eliminating a wide range of weeds from your lawn, including dandelions, chickweeds and more.

Our IFA Weed & Feed is specially formulated with premium lawn fertilizers to promote thick, dark green grass. The blends’ non-staining iron prevents and corrects iron deficient yellowing while keeping your driveway stain-free. It’s excellent for lawns of Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Turf Type Tall Fescue, and most other types of cool season turf grasses.

While our step 2 application is specifically developed for soil in the Intermountain West, the climate varies from one part of our region to another. Apply it before daytime highs in your area consistently reach 85 degrees. Communities in higher elevations may be able to apply it as late as June; where as, southern or lower lying areas may only have until late April or mid-May before temperatures are too hot.

The application process with IFA Weed & Feed is different than the rest of the IFA 4Plus Lawn Care program. Your lawn should be watered prior to applying Weed & Feed either from a sprinkling system, hose end sprinkler, or a kind spring rain from mother nature. The granules will adhere and remain on the wet leaves, helping to eliminate unwanted weeds. Allow the fertilizer to sit on the grass for 1 to 2 days before thoroughly watering it in and subsequently feeding your lawn. Apply it as directed and you’ll have a healthy, lush lawn heading into the summer months.

Avoid applying to newly seeded lawns. The herbicide present in IFA Weed & Feed will impede new grass seed growth. IFA Weed & Feed may be applied to a newly seeded lawn after the third mowing.

When to apply: APR., MAY OR JUN.

Apply #2 IFA Weed & Feed in spring; anytime between the beginning of April and mid-June (before daytime highs consistently reach 85 degrees). Make sure at least 4 to 6 weeks have passed between applying IFA Crabgrass Preventer + Lawn Food and IFA Weed & Feed.

How To Apply:

  1. Mow lawn to normal height 1 to 2 days before application
  2. Water lawn thoroughly at least 1 day before application to sustain moisture until the next watering
  3. Add IFA Weed & Feed to spreader
  4. Apply when weeds are young and growing actively, preferably in the morning when dew is on the grass. If grass is not moist at time of application, sprinkle lightly with water to allow the granules to adhere and to remain on the leaf surface of the weeds.
  5. Do not wash from weed leaves for 1 to 2 days after application. At this time, water the lawn thoroughly.
  6. Apply only once and wait 4-6 weeks before applying IFA Spring & Summer Lawn Food

Recommended Spreader Settings:

Before applying, consider the following settings: Earthway Drop, 13; Earthway EV-N-Spred Broadcast, 13; IFA Broadcast, 13; Chapin All Season Broadcast, 6; Scotts Elite Spreader, 5; Scotts Classic Drop, 8; Scotts EdgeGuard DLX, 5; Scotts Edgeguard Mini, 5; Scotts Whirl Hand Spreader, 5 (*apply over lawn twice); and Scotts Wizz Hand Spreader, 6 (*apply over lawn twice). Uniformly apply over your lawn and slightly overlap walking paths (especially with drop spreaders) to avoid lines.

As a general rule, open any spreader 1/4 inch and walk at a normal pace. If you walk at a faster pace, you’ll need to open up the spreader slightly more. Adjust any setting based on your preference and pace.

Spreader settings are approximate. Check your spreader for accuracy. The settings are based upon a maximum rate of 4.0 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. For questions regarding any of our spreaders, please ask an employee at your local IFA Country Store.
